Does the UK have district heating?

Yes, the UK has district heating, usually called heat networks: a central heat source sends hot water through insulated pipes to many buildings. It serves a small share of homes, roughly half a million consumers according to government data, mostly in flats and new developments in dense urban areas.

How long it takes and what disruption to expect

Nobody can ask for a district heating connection on a whim, so the first question is whether a network exists on your street at all. Most UK schemes were built as part of a housing estate, a regeneration site or a block of flats. If you live in one, you are probably already connected, and the heat arrives through a heat interface unit in your home rather than a boiler.

For a network to reach an existing street, the work means digging up roads and pavements to lay insulated pipes, and that is planned over months or years by the operator, not by an individual household. Inside your home, the disruption is far smaller: a unit on the wall, pipework to the radiators, and a meter. Where a home swaps a gas boiler for central heating fed from a network, the job is closer to a boiler replacement than a rebuild.

If you want to know what a normal heating system involves while you wait for any network plans, our heating services page covers radiators, central heating and upkeep.

Mistakes and misconceptions people make about it

  • Thinking it is everywhere. It is not. Gas boilers still heat most UK homes, and heat networks are concentrated in cities and large estates.
  • Assuming it is a different kind of fuel. The heat source can be gas boilers, heat pumps, waste heat or energy-from-waste. The network is the delivery method, not the fuel.
  • Expecting to choose your supplier. If a network serves your building, the operator is normally the only supplier of that heat.
  • Believing it always means low-carbon heat. Carbon emissions depend entirely on what feeds the energy centre.
  • Forgetting Northern Ireland. Ofgem regulates heat networks in England, Scotland and Wales, which is a different position from Northern Ireland.

What to do next

Start by finding out whether you are already on a network. Look for a heat interface unit, a heat meter and a bill from a heat supplier rather than a gas supplier. Your landlord, managing agent or housing provider can confirm it.

If you are on a network and something inside your home is wrong, such as cold radiators or pressure problems, say so to the operator first, because the unit and the supply side belong to them. Problems with radiators, pipework or hot water on your side of the meter are ordinary plumbing and heating jobs. Across Greater London, we can look at those once you describe the problem, and you get a written price before any work starts.

If you are not on a network, nothing about the question means your current system is wrong. A well-kept boiler and radiators do the same job for a single home.

What you can safely do yourself and what needs a professional

You can read your own heat meter, bleed a radiator, check that room thermostats and valves are working, and keep notes of any loss of heat so you can describe it clearly. If you want to understand your bills, our guide on how much does heating cost per month in the uk explains what drives the figure.

Leave the heat interface unit, the pipework feeding it and anything touching gas to the right people. The unit is usually the operator's equipment, and gas work has legal rules behind it, as the Gas Safe Register explains. For leaks, cold spots, faulty radiator valves or a failing hot water supply on your side of the meter, describe the job to us and we will tell you what it needs.
